About the role
Product Manager - R&D and MedTech
Location: Oxford, Oxfordshire
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
Working Pattern: Full-time, office-based
Sector: AI | Medical Technology | Product Innovation | Research & Development
What if you could shape the next generation of AI-powered medical imaging technology?
Do you love taking emerging AI technologies from early research concepts to working prototypes?
Are you excited by the challenge of defining what a new product should do, proving its potential and preparing it for real-world use?
Would you enjoy combining hands-on Python development, technical innovation and strategic product thinking in a role where your decisions genuinely matter?
Our client is a growing, innovation-led medical technology organisation based in Oxford, developing advanced AI-powered imaging solutions that help healthcare professionals make more informed clinical decisions.
They are looking for a Product Manager to join their Research & Innovation team, taking a pivotal role in identifying, prototyping and validating future product opportunities.
This isn't a traditional Product Management position. You'll be directly involved in the technical exploration of emerging capabilities, using your scientific judgement and development expertise to determine which ideas have the greatest potential and how they can become commercially viable, clinically valuable products.
Working closely with researchers, software engineers, clinical specialists and regulatory experts, you'll help bridge the gap between scientific discovery and the development of regulated medical technology.
Why This Role is Great
Shape the future of AI-powered imaging products
Take ownership of exciting early-stage product opportunities, influencing which technologies are developed and how they evolve.
- Define minimum viable products (MVPs) and establish clear technical and functional requirements.
- Explore opportunities to apply machine learning, computer vision and advanced imaging techniques to real-world challenges.
- Develop product roadmaps that balance scientific innovation, clinical needs and commercial potential.
- Help prioritise features and capabilities that could deliver meaningful improvements to medical imaging technology.
Get hands-on with prototyping and emerging AI technologies
Enjoy the freedom to experiment, test ideas and rapidly establish whether innovative technical approaches are worth pursuing.
- Build and refine Python-based prototypes to demonstrate new product capabilities.
- Evaluate machine learning models, image analysis techniques and emerging AI tools.
- Test technical concepts early, identifying potential challenges before significant development investment.
- Turn promising research findings into practical solutions ready for engineering teams to develop further.
Help bring innovative technology into regulated healthcare
Develop valuable experience at the intersection of AI innovation, product validation and medical technology regulation.
- Explore how new product capabilities can meet clinical, technical and regulatory expectations.
- Contribute to validation strategies and evidence-generation plans.
- Support early regulatory assessments, including potential FDA 510(k) and MDR pathways.
- Help create the technical documentation and evidence needed to support future product development and regulatory submissions.
Collaborate with experts across multiple disciplines
Work alongside talented individuals who bring different perspectives to complex technical and scientific challenges.
- Partner with Research, Engineering, Clinical, Operations and Regulatory teams to develop and evaluate new ideas.
- Engage with end users to understand practical requirements and test prototypes within realistic workflows.
- Build relationships with academic researchers, technical specialists and external collaborators.
- Contribute to scientific publications, technical presentations and research-led innovation activities.
Become a key voice in technical and product decisions
This is an opportunity to develop your influence beyond hands-on technical delivery.
- Help teams make confident decisions when research findings or requirements are still evolving.
- Translate complex scientific possibilities into clear product opportunities.
- Identify risks early and establish practical ways to address them.
- Bring people together around shared priorities, helping ambitious projects maintain momentum.
About You
You'll have the opportunity to combine your technical knowledge of AI, machine learning or medical imaging with a growing involvement in product strategy, prototyping and commercial innovation.
Our client's wishlist includes:
- AI and machine learning: Experience developing, evaluating or applying machine learning technologies, ideally within imaging, computer vision or another data-intensive environment.
- Python development: Confidence using Python to explore technical concepts, build prototypes and evaluate new approaches.
- Scientific problem-solving: Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess technical feasibility, interpret results and make informed recommendations.
- Research translation: Experience taking complex technical or scientific ideas and developing them into practical applications.
- Rapid prototyping: An experimental mindset, with the ability to test ideas quickly and improve solutions through feedback.
- Product thinking: An interest in defining product requirements, understanding user needs and identifying where technology can deliver the greatest value.
- Collaborative leadership: The confidence to work across different disciplines, communicate technical concepts clearly and influence decisions without relying on formal authority.
You may also bring experience in areas such as CT imaging, medical image analysis, regulated software development, clinical validation, FDA or MDR submissions, or working with healthcare professionals.
Exposure to foundation models, modern AI development tools, scientific publications or intellectual property development would be particularly interesting.
You don't need to have experience in every area.
Perhaps you're an experienced Machine Learning Scientist, AI Research Scientist, Computer Vision Engineer, Medical Imaging Scientist, Technical Product Manager or Research Engineer looking to take greater ownership of product innovation.
Alternatively, you may already be working in technical product development and want a position that offers more scientific depth, hands-on experimentation and influence over future technology.
If you can combine technical curiosity with sound judgement and enjoy transforming uncertain ideas into clear, actionable plans, this could be an excellent opportunity.
What Could You Achieve in Your First Year?
Within your first 12 months, you could have:
- Defined a compelling MVP for an emerging AI-powered imaging product.
- Developed and validated prototypes demonstrating the feasibility of new technical capabilities.
- Established a clear roadmap for taking promising innovations towards product implementation.
- Helped identify and reduce regulatory and technical risks before formal development begins.
- Built trusted relationships across research, engineering, clinical and regulatory teams.
- Influenced important decisions about the organisation's future technology portfolio.
You'll be able to see how your work directly influences the direction of new products, rather than simply contributing to isolated research projects.
What's in It for You?
Our client offers an attractive benefits package alongside the opportunity to work on technically challenging and meaningful innovation projects.
- Competitive salary reflecting your experience and technical expertise.
- 25 days' annual leave, plus bank holidays.
- Enhanced employer pension contributions to support your long-term financial wellbeing.
- Private medical insurance providing additional healthcare support.
- Life insurance for extra peace of mind.
- Cycle-to-work scheme to support your daily commute.
- Additional long-service benefits recognising your commitment.
- Career development opportunities within a growing organisation at the forefront of advanced imaging technology.
You'll join an environment that values intellectual curiosity, practical experimentation and open collaboration, with opportunities to expand your knowledge of AI, medical technology regulation and strategic product development.
Why Make Your Next Move?
This is a rare opportunity to combine hands-on AI development with genuine influence over future product strategy.
Rather than inheriting an established roadmap, you'll help determine which ideas deserve investment, how they should be tested and what it will take to turn them into successful products.
You'll work on challenges involving AI, medical imaging, scientific validation and regulated technology, gaining exposure to the complete journey from early-stage innovation to product readiness.
For someone who enjoys building prototypes, challenging assumptions and making complex technical decisions, this role offers a particularly rewarding combination of creativity, responsibility and real-world impact.
