About the role
Mechanical Design Engineer – Fixed-Term Contract
Precision Engineering | Mechanical Design | SolidWorks | Innovative Technology
Are you a Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys turning complex engineering challenges into clever, practical solutions?
Do you love seeing your designs progress from an initial concept through to a fully functioning machine?
Would you thrive in a collaborative engineering team where your ideas, creativity and technical expertise can make a real difference?
If you're looking for an opportunity to apply your mechanical design skills to sophisticated, high-precision technology, this could be just the role for you!
Our client is seeking a talented Mechanical Design Engineer to join their engineering team on a fixed-term contract. You'll play an important part in developing advanced, precision-engineered equipment, working on technically interesting projects that combine mechanical design, motion systems and complex integrated technologies.
This is an opportunity to take real ownership of your designs, solve interesting engineering challenges and see your work make a tangible impact, from early-stage development through to production.
Why This Role is Great
Bring your engineering ideas to life
Enjoy the freedom to develop innovative mechanical and optomechanical designs using SolidWorks, taking concepts through detailed design and into manufacture. You'll work on everything from precision assemblies and motion systems to custom mounting solutions and specialist enclosures.
Get hands-on with cutting-edge engineering
Collaborate with experienced Systems Engineers to develop test rigs, refine designs and explore practical solutions to complex technical challenges. It's a great opportunity to apply your creativity while expanding your knowledge of integrated engineering systems.
See your designs become reality
Take pride in producing detailed engineering drawings, selecting suitable manufacturing approaches and collaborating with suppliers to turn your ideas into high-quality components and assemblies. You'll have opportunities to work with both additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques.
Make your mark on the design process
Play an active role in design reviews, contribute fresh ideas and help develop efficient, cost-effective engineering solutions. You'll also have the chance to build on your knowledge of product development processes, including New Product Introduction (NPI), FMEA and engineering change management.
Take ownership and make a difference
Maintain accurate CAD assemblies and engineering documentation using Product Data Management (PDM) tools, prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs) and support the smooth transition of designs into production.
You'll be joining a close-knit engineering environment where collaboration, technical curiosity and creative problem-solving are valued.
About You
You're an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys solving technical problems, working with complex assemblies and finding smarter ways to make things work.
You'll bring your existing design expertise to a role that offers plenty of variety, technical challenges and opportunities to build on your knowledge.
Our client's wishlist includes:
- Mechanical design expertise: Ideally around five years or more of experience designing mechanical components, assemblies or precision-engineered equipment.
- SolidWorks skills: Confidence in using SolidWorks for 3D CAD modelling, detailed design and manufacturing drawings.
- Engineering knowledge: A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience, training or technical qualifications.
- A creative approach: An enthusiasm for exploring new ideas, overcoming engineering challenges and developing practical solutions.
- An eye for detail: The ability to produce accurate engineering documentation while keeping track of multiple design activities.
- Collaborative communication: Enjoyment of sharing ideas, participating in design discussions and working with colleagues across engineering disciplines.
- Technical curiosity: A genuine interest in understanding how sophisticated mechanical and integrated systems work.
Even Better If You Have…
Experience in any of the following areas would be a welcome bonus:
- Precision engineering, optomechanical systems, motion control or specialist machinery design.
- Designing enclosures, machine frames or complex mechanical assemblies.
- Knowledge of relevant machinery safety requirements and ISO 9000 quality standards.
- Familiarity with PDM, MRP or ERP systems.
- Experience using engineering simulation or optical modelling tools such as COMSOL, Zemax, RayViz or TracePro.
Don't tick every box? We'd still love to hear from you.
If your background is in mechanical design, automation, special-purpose machinery, precision manufacturing or another technically demanding engineering environment, you may have exactly the transferable skills our client is looking for.
What matters most is your engineering ability, enthusiasm for problem-solving and willingness to get involved.
