Last week, the Golang Oxford community gathered for our fourth meet-up of the year, and it was one of our best events yet! This time, we had the pleasure of partnering with Barclays Eagle Labs to host the event at the incredible Wood Centre for Innovation, a state-of-the-art science and technology hub just outside Oxford city centre. Surrounded by lush greenery and home to innovation-driven start-ups, the venue provided the perfect atmosphere for an evening packed with learning, networking, and everything Go-related.
A New Partnership: Humand Talent and Barclays Eagle Labs
This meet-up marked the beginning of an exciting partnership between Humand Talent and Barclays Eagle Labs. Barclays’ commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship across the UK perfectly aligns with Humand Talent’s mission of nurturing and supporting tech communities like ours.
We kicked off the evening with a warm welcome, giving attendees the chance to network in a relaxed setting while enjoying some refreshments. It was a great opportunity for recruitment businesses, tech companies, and software engineers from Oxford to connect, share ideas, and explore potential collaborations.
A GopherCon 2024 Preview with Two Stellar Speakers
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the talks, and we were fortunate to have two remarkable speakers from GopherCon 2024 share their insights into the world of Go.
Talk #1: Embracing Complexity with Go – Shivam Acharya
The first speaker, Shivam Acharya, took us on a deep dive into the complexities of Go. With his extensive experience in software engineering at companies like Aviva, Shivam’s talk, “Entropy and Go: How to Start Embracing Complex Code”, challenged the audience to rethink how they approach complexity in their Go projects.
While Go is known for its simplicity, Shivam encouraged attendees to embrace complexity as something manageable rather than something to be feared. He shared real-world examples from his team at Aviva, showcasing how they navigated complexity when refactoring a critical internal service. The talk resonated deeply with attendees, sparking lively conversations during the networking breaks about managing complex systems and codebases in Go.
Talk #2: Building a Shell and Programming Language in Go – Qi Xiao
After a brief networking break, Qi Xiao, an independent developer and former Google engineer, took to the stage. Qi’s talk, “Implementing and Testing a Shell and Programming Language in Go”, was a fascinating exploration of Elvish, a shell and programming language he developed using Go.
For those interested in how terminal shells work or who dream of building their own programming language, this talk was a goldmine. Qi gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the architecture and development process of Elvish, including how he achieved an impressive 92% test coverage. His insights into the challenges of building flexible yet powerful tools were invaluable, leaving attendees inspired to think about the possibilities of what they could build using Go.
Networking, Connections, and Looking Ahead
Beyond the informative talks, the event was a fantastic opportunity for professionals from Oxford’s software engineering and tech scene to connect. Whether the conversation revolved around low-latency systems, Go’s concurrency model, or best practices for writing efficient Go code, the networking was abuzz with ideas and potential partnerships.
Our community has grown significantly since its launch in April, and it was wonderful to see so many familiar and new faces joining us. As our Gopher community continues to expand, we’re excited to see what the future holds!
